SPEAKER_02
00:02:10
All in favor?
00:02:14
Opposed?
00:02:15
Okay, those minutes are approved.
Mike Gaffney
Chair, Rivanna Solid Waste Authority
00:02:17
So next item on the revised agenda is the executive director's report.
Bill Mawyer
Executive Director
00:02:23
Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
00:02:24
So we did have a terrific grand opening of the Southern Albemarle Convenience Center on June 22nd, even just quite the rain.
00:02:32
And I wanted to thank Deborah Anama and the Solid Waste team for putting that together where they had tents and all sorts of nice things for the crowd that we have attend.
00:02:43
But it was an opportunity for the residents to tour the facility.
00:02:47
We had our Chairman, Mr. Gaffney, open the ceremony and had remarks as did the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors Chair, Ms. Donna Price, along with Ed Brooks, who is the Yancy School Community Center Program Coordinator.
00:03:02
And even I had a few things to say.
00:03:03
We thank Phil McKalips, our Director of Solid Waste, for helping to
00:03:10
I shepherd that project along with Jennifer Whitaker and her construction crew for getting it done and ready for grand opening in June.
00:03:20
So we have been receiving on average about 50 to 60 vehicles per day.
00:03:24
That seems to be increasing.
00:03:26
and it was a great opening and I think a terrific facility.
00:03:33
It looked great.
00:03:34
Everyone was pleased and it springboarded us into a meeting even last week about a northern convenience center.
00:03:41
So with Mr. Stewart, we're starting that discussion and planning for a potential facility in the northern part of the county.
00:03:50
Okay, so we did complete the spring refuse special collection days and that was quite successful.
00:03:57
That was back in April and May.
00:04:00
We had over 340 vehicles bring e-waste.
00:04:05
We had over 800 customers show up with household hazardous waste.
00:04:11
We accepted over 29,000 pounds of furniture and mattresses.
00:04:17
Over 21,000 pounds of appliances and we had 175 customers bring tires.
00:04:26
So quite a successful event and we appreciate the City and County sponsoring that for the residents of our community.
00:04:35
and on the heels of that, we have scheduled the fall refuse special collection days that are gonna be held in September and October.
00:04:45
So we will have these dates up on our webpage for residents to plan their next trip to the Ivy special collection days.
00:04:58
This graph shows the usage at the transfer station and you see the red graph at the top.
00:05:05
and basically every year the tonnage is increasing through the Ivy Transfer Station.
00:05:12
So I reflect back to 2018 when we had a goal of when we were taking about 40 tons per day and we built the transfer station with the goal of reaching 90 tons per day
00:05:26
and we were recently well over 200 tons per day so we have far exceeded the goal of increasing refuse disposal through the Ivy Transfer Station and we thank the county for sponsoring that.
00:05:42
Similarly, we did a count at the McIntire Recycling Center and we had over 3,100 customers in one week at McIntire, which was a 10% increase
00:05:56
since 2021, the last two years.
00:05:59
And we did a similar count at the Ivy Convenience Center where we had 530 customers in a week, which is about an 8% increase.
00:06:09
So refuse and recycling are on the rise in our community.
00:06:13
We're getting about 20% more refuse this year than we did last year.
00:06:20
So we're growing.
00:06:21
And a big thanks to Phil McKalips, our solid waste manager and David Rhoades and Ralph Feigenstein, his managers, along with the solid waste transfer staff and the recycling staff for doing a super job managing these facilities.
00:06:36
I have commented that as a boy and a teenager, I used to bring trash to the Ivy dump 50 years ago.
00:06:44
And it was,
00:06:46
It was nowhere near the facility we have now.
00:06:48
We now have a modern sanitary landfill and clearly our staff does a great job there and it's just so improved it's hard to think that with the organization the cleanliness and we're moving a huge amount of product be it recycling or refuse through that through the station so thanks to Phil and his group.
SPEAKER_02
00:07:11
And that's my report, Mr. Chairman.
Mike Gaffney
Chair, Rivanna Solid Waste Authority
00:07:15
Thank you.
00:07:16
Comments or questions for Bill?
00:07:20
I'll make one comment.
00:07:21
And this is to the Southern Convenience Center.
00:07:25
It's great with having all those tents.
00:07:28
And I'm sure that originally you planned to have the tents to keep the sun off of us.
00:07:34
But we stayed dry, I think.
SPEAKER_04
00:07:38
Yeah.
00:07:39
Was it pretty wet that day?
Mike Gaffney
Chair, Rivanna Solid Waste Authority
00:07:41
It was raining off and on.
00:07:43
And the only challenge were the people that were sitting in the fold between the tents.
00:07:49
If there was a wind, they could dump water there.
SPEAKER_10
00:07:54
Right on that drainage channel.
SPEAKER_02
00:07:58
Yeah.
Mike Gaffney
Chair, Rivanna Solid Waste Authority
00:07:58
All right.
00:07:59
Let's move on to the items from the public.
00:08:05
For those who wish to speak,
00:08:07
I would ask that you identify yourself for the public record and limit your comments to three minutes.
00:08:15
John, do we have anyone who would like to speak at this time?
SPEAKER_03
00:08:19
There's no comments from the public at this time.
Mike Gaffney
Chair, Rivanna Solid Waste Authority
00:08:21
Okay.
00:08:22
And do we have anyone here in the boardroom?
00:08:27
Okay.
00:08:27
We will close the items from the public note that there's no responses and move on to the consent agenda.
00:08:35
Are there any items on the consent agenda board members would like to pull through some of the questions?
SPEAKER_02
00:08:44
Okay, do we have a motion and a second?
00:08:46
So you approve?
Mike Gaffney
Chair, Rivanna Solid Waste Authority
00:08:48
I move for approval of the consent agenda.
00:08:50
Second.
00:08:52
We have motion and a second, all in favor?
00:08:55
Aye.
00:08:55
Opposed?
00:08:57
Okay, motion carries.
00:08:59
Under other business, we are going to recess the Rivanna Solid Waste Authority Board.
00:09:08
And I would ask that Valerie walk us through that.
00:09:12
Or do we just take a motion to recess?
00:09:17
Okay, we have a motion to recess.
00:09:19
Do we have a second?
00:09:21
Second.
00:09:21
All in favor?
