She found herself in this situation because of the extenuating circumstances in our community that lead to sustained cycles of generational poverty.

We're hopeful to break those cycles.

How close is your relationship with social services?

and beginning to develop a dialogue and a way to monitor and support those families long term.

Do they make recommendations to you that you contact certain people?

But it would be on a referral basis for a particular kind of service.

How do you know when someone needs help?

And that means running water, electric and food to provide nourishment.

Do the schools make recommendations?

Most of the social service organizations in Nelson County will refer families to MAPA for one of those services.

I don't know if ACRJ has any direct communication with them.

I don't know what agencies they may have.

The idea is rather than duplicate effort or be behind the curve

Does you all have a physical presence, an office, a location in the county, or is this just, I see your Charlottesville address.

We do serve the counties of Blue Valley, Louisa, and Elsonville.

There is a big walk in an office.

It really does though take our entire community making an investment together in that work and supporting a new way of engaging families.

I know you mentioned Head Start and at some point you mentioned Bright Start and I know basically Head Start is federal, Bright Start is state.

That's right.

So is it safe to say that I just want to make sure I understand

Those are direct federal funds.

The intention being

that in each locality the state has requested that Head Start classrooms be built first to ensure that federal funds are utilized to serve the most vulnerable students because our restrictions for enrollment in Head Start are more stringent than BPI enrollment and the idea that maximizing state and local funding for service to children with different needs.

But the barriers to become a licensed teacher have become so much greater than they were.

So I would say if there's anybody interested, please have them call me, have them call us and we'll try to walk them through what it would take to be able to do that.

I just want to thank you once more for allowing us to participate as members in the Board of Education and the people of Nelson County.

And that's something that I've heard from a couple of different people.

I wanted to have an impact.

I heard some optimistic news on the pupil count might be up this year.

Moving on to New and Unfinished Business, Gladstone Depot Project.

I think that's pretty much all I had to say about it, and I'll turn it over to Joni and now to pass some money.

The Blue Ridge Trail, do you know approximately how much of the trail is in Nelson County?

Mostly ampershed.

So, I can tell you because I wrapped my bike on it.

So that five mile section.

It crisscrosses with the river.

And that's just some rough math on my part.

Otherwise, we're looking at an additional $3 million.

Can you say that people who gave the assessment did a bad job?

And I mean, that was a ticket shock factor that's pretty serious.

One, you know, the size of building that would be required, the size of office space, and then the price.

which added some additional space.

But, you know, we both agree that the building is still a priority.

So these are very high level numbers right now.

And I'll also mention too, we're not sure what the footprint of the lane disturbance will be, but if it's over an acre and they have to pursue the Department of Environmental Quality approvals, that often can take over a year.

That should be completed next spring.

They asked for two six unit buildings.

And there's only one entrance right there, right across from the distillery.

That's roughly cutting it in half.
