Because in scripture, when Jesus talks about loving neighbor, both in the parable of the good Samaritan and in his conversation with the rich young ruler, on both occasions, it becomes abundantly clear that caring for the physical needs of the poor and the marginalized is essential to what Jesus means when he calls his community as disciples to love their neighbors.
