      Mary is not here.

      Wolfgang is not here.

      Suzanne.
    • Suzanne LynnMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:08:32
      Here.
    • Jessica HarrisChair, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:08:33
Now we will recite our mission.
    • SPEAKER_02
    • 00:08:42
Act as a strong advocate to justice and equal opportunity by providing citywide leadership and guidance in the area of civil rights.
    • Jessica HarrisChair, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:08:53
So members of the public who are attending in person, welcome.
    • 00:08:58
You are open to public comment during the matters by the public, which we're about to go into.
    • 00:09:02
The commission is currently not receiving virtual public comment.
    • 00:09:06
The commission welcomes comments and questions and commits to listening carefully and thoughtfully to what is presented.
    • 00:09:12
      A maximum of 16
    • 00:09:14
Public time slots are allowed per meeting.
    • 00:09:17
Each speaker will have three minutes to speak.
    • 00:09:19
The commission requests that members of the public refrain from engaging in personal attacks against commissioners and staff members and ask that comments and questions focus on matters related to human rights within the city.
    • 00:09:30
Do we have any public comment?
    • 00:09:34
      Awesome.
    • 00:09:35
      All right.
    • 00:09:36
So there's no response to public comment because there's no public comment.
    • 00:09:38
And we have to approve our regular meeting minutes from 10th, 1923.
    • 00:09:43
      Last one.
    • 00:09:43
      Great.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:09:44
And if there are no proposed amendments, we'll go ahead and do the roll call vote.
    • 00:09:51
      Jessica?
    • 00:09:52
      Approve.
    • 00:09:55
      Ernest?
    • 00:09:55
      Approve.
    • 00:09:57
      Jeanette?
    • SPEAKER_04
    • 00:09:58
      Approve.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:10:00
      Suzanne?
    • 00:10:00
      Approve.
    • 00:10:02
      and Andy.
    • SPEAKER_00
    • 00:10:03
      Approved.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:10:04
Just to confirm we do have quorum which is five or greater so thanks for everybody being here.
    • Jessica HarrisChair, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:10:19
Then I'll have Chair update so last month
    • 00:10:24
      I don't remember the date.
    • 00:10:25
We got to attend the Virginia HRC meeting where all of the different commissioners from across the state of Virginia get to come and convene.
    • 00:10:35
At this meeting they actually decided to dissolve.
    • 00:10:39
their nonprofit but still the independent commissions will commit to meeting potentially again in Virginia Beach.
    • 00:10:47
It was really insightful to be there to hear from all of the different speakers.
    • 00:10:53
I know we have our challenges in the city but to hear some of the challenges that other commissions were having were like
    • 00:10:58
We're in a better place than most.
    • 00:10:59
So some just didn't have really a direct line to their city council.
    • 00:11:04
And so it just made me like, oh, that's a different perspective.
    • 00:11:07
And so it was a really fruitful conversation.
    • 00:11:10
      That's my high level overview.
    • 00:11:11
But I took lots of notes.
    • 00:11:13
But Todd and Lily also attended.
    • 00:11:15
      Maybe they want to add?
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:11:18
And just so folks know, I don't know how many folks are aware, we maybe have talked about this when you first came on, just to give you sort of an orientation, but there's Human Rights Commissions in Northern Virginia and Alexandria, Arlington, Prince William, and I remember getting one up there, that's the three main ones up there, and then also, oh and Fairfax, I knew there was
    • 00:11:48
Some with expanded enforcement powers, but some of them do have a FAP or a future agreement as well.
    • 00:11:53
And then there's one down in Virginia Beach, Newport News, and now a resurgence of one in Richmond.
    • 00:12:01
None of them have enforcement power.
    • 00:12:03
So it's interesting to see kind of this different stages at which people are at in the development of their commissions.
    • 00:12:11
Yeah, we'll continue to stay in touch with all of them because we learn, and I'm always asking questions from people who have been doing it longer than we have, so.
    • SPEAKER_02
    • 00:12:20
I have a question about, as far as the force of power, what are the main things that those,
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:12:31
      That's a great question.
    • 00:12:34
They're mostly focused on community relations and community outreach, so they host a lot of events, dialogues, things like that.
    • 00:12:42
They stay in touch with city council to do commemorative proclamations, things like that.
    • 00:12:50
      So it's fun.
    • 00:12:51
I think we have, Will and I have a plan to reach out to some of, I think Prince William and Virginia Beach in particular, just to kind of pick their brains on some of the programming they've been doing to see if we can bring some, or replicate some of that up here.
    • Jessica HarrisChair, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:13:02
So yeah, lots of creative stuff out there.
    • 00:13:06
We had a panel discussion for those who had important power in that.
    • 00:13:11
      And then the DA?
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:13:14
We had the Attorney General's Office representative who was there as well as a representative from one of the EEOC local offices in, was it Newport News?
    • 00:13:26
      Norfolk.
    • 00:13:27
      Norfolk.
    • 00:13:27
      Thank you.
    • 00:13:30
      Yeah.
    • 00:13:30
both of whom had good things, interesting stuff to say.
    • Jessica HarrisChair, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:13:34
It was interesting to see what comes through their office, the frequency of them.
    • 00:13:39
I thought it was very insightful.
    • 00:13:46
Being a part of the VHRC is changing, so I don't know what it will look like for people next year.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:13:53
The VAHR, so that was the Virginia Association of Human Rights, it's been around for quite some time, but I think what they found was it's just very hard to organize across the state, but ultimately the culminating event each year was just a gathering somewhere, and it typically
    • 00:14:11
They've tried it in different places, but the most successful ones have always been Virginia Beach just because, hey, Virginia Beach, that's fine.
    • 00:14:17
And so the Virginia Beach Commission has offered to take it on just to plan that event.
    • 00:14:24
And I said, hey, reach out if you want input, feedback, collaboration on the planning of that event.
    • 00:14:30
But I think that's going to recur.
    • 00:14:31
      It'll probably occur in June.
    • 00:14:33
So if folks are interested in that as it approaches I'll let you know that it's coming and then we can we should have enough budget to pay for everybody to go down and potentially spend the night down there because it's on a Saturday typically so I'd like to be able to offer that in the future this was just kind of
    • 00:14:53
They were in this kind of process of deciding whether or not to disband.
    • 00:14:58
This conference just was like their last hurrah, and it came about pretty abruptly.
    • 00:15:02
So with some advance notice, we can get everybody down there if you want to go.
    • 00:15:07
And I would highly encourage it.
    • 00:15:08
It was just good to see the other commissioners and what they're doing, and also share what we're doing.
    • Jessica HarrisChair, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:15:12
So for sure, if you can, I would recommend it highly.
    • 00:15:15
      That's all my updates.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:15:18
      Thanks, Jessica.
    • 00:15:19
Want to pass it on to Lily?
    • 00:15:21
      Yes.
    • SPEAKER_06
    • 00:15:23
Okay, the data in the agenda is up to date and so is the list of upcoming events that I'm planning to attend including the weekday and I'll continue to send you emails each week with the events of that week if there are any as long as that continues to be useful for all of you.
    • 00:15:47
So yeah, if you want to attend any of those or if you have any questions about them or
    • 00:15:51
If there is an event that you know of that's not on that list that you think I should put on the list, let me know.
    • 00:15:57
And other outreach-related updates are I'm working on new brochures, so I have drafts of those.
    • 00:16:10
We're working on translating them and then ultimately printing them to be distributed in our tabling and our flyering.
    • 00:16:17
We have four upcoming seats on the commission opening up soon and the deadline to apply for those on December 8th.
    • 00:16:28
So we've been doing some outreach in terms of recruiting for people to apply to those, but we think it might be helpful if there's a commissioner that's willing to provide public comment at a city council meeting or multiple city council meetings.
    • 00:16:47
Just to let people know that that's available for them to apply to and the details for how to do so.
    • 00:16:53
So if you're willing to do that, you can talk to me or talk about the details for how to do that.
    • 00:16:59
And also if you have a person you know or a group that you're a part of that you think would be a good place to do some recruitment, you're welcome to do that.
    • 00:17:11
and also if you have any other ideas for things you want me to do to boost recruitment and just like awareness strategies, I'm happy to hear those.
    • 00:17:24
In terms of the tenure commemorative event, we're leaning away from doing some sort of actual like
    • 00:17:36
Standalone event and acknowledging the 10 year anniversary of the commission and the office instead through a proclamation by city council and just general recognition in one of their meetings.
    • 00:17:52
And I believe that's everything I have to update you on.
    • SPEAKER_04
    • 00:18:04
There's a turkey deal with us some day at Tonsil Park.
    • 00:18:09
I don't know if you want to have that be an outreach event or if you'd like me to take some materials.
    • 00:18:14
We'll be there giving away sweet potatoes.
    • 00:18:17
      OK.
    • Suzanne LynnMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:18:19
      Thank you.
    • SPEAKER_04
    • 00:18:19
      Just let me know.
    • Suzanne LynnMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:18:22
      Suzanne?
    • 00:18:23
In terms of the recruitment of members, I think I heard you say this.
    • 00:18:33
Are people talking to some people?
    • 00:18:36
Are there some one-on-one conversations happening in addition to the broader outreach?
    • 00:18:41
      Does anybody know?
    • 00:18:44
I don't know if we've identified specific people that we would like to have on here.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:18:49
      We've had one applicant already.
    • 00:18:52
I know that I got a phone call from another person who was considering applying and had
    • 00:19:01
service entails and stuff like that.
    • 00:19:04
So I have not checked with Max recently to see what the current standing of number of applicants is, but yeah I mean that's a welcome thing if you know folks, have them call if they're curious and want to talk to me or we can put them in touch with Chair, Vice Chair as well if they have questions.
    • SPEAKER_06
    • 00:19:28
I think so far our approach has been more broadly generally advertising it like with a newsflash that just goes to anyone looking at the city website or anybody who's subscribed and things like that rather than targeting specific individuals.
    • Suzanne LynnMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:19:44
Yeah, I was just thinking, I mean, that personal touch, if they're, and I'm only saying that I'm not necessarily, like, I'm not looking at you, like, you should be doing all of it, like, I'm just too, to the point, like, if we, if we have individuals, it might take a little extra, extra boost sometimes, I think, for people to, I mean, everybody's so committed to so many different things, and so, sometimes it takes that extra, extra to actually recruit somebody, so that's the reason I was asking.
    • Jessica HarrisChair, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:20:14
That's how it's done in the past.
    • Suzanne LynnMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:20:16
People usually reach out to someone and they need to ask.
    • Jessica HarrisChair, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:20:21
Is there a link or a place to sign up for the presentation to Charlottesville Refugee Dialogue?
    • SPEAKER_06
    • 00:20:29
That is a staff meeting that they requested that we present to their staff.
    • 00:20:39
I don't know if Todd, I don't know that we, it's not a public presentation, but I think maybe if you wanted to participate in a presentation itself, you could.
    • 00:20:51
It is tomorrow, which is short notice, but.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:20:54
We could probably connect you with Harriet if you wanted to get a link or something like that.
    • SPEAKER_02
    • 00:21:02
      Okay.
    • Jessica HarrisChair, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:21:07
And then with the, I don't know, maybe things are changing, but usually it's the chair that presents, I mean, unless you're doing public comment, usually it's the chair that presents the city council.
    • 00:21:17
But I have to potentially be there for open comment anyways.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:21:20
Which one are we talking about?
    • Jessica HarrisChair, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:21:22
So to be able to tell, to talk about and advertise being on the commission, I have to already be potentially at a city council meeting so I can also do that then?
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:21:35
      Okay.
    • Jessica HarrisChair, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:21:35
You were just saying that people should go like independently as their
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:21:40
      Anything else Lily?
    • Jessica HarrisChair, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:22:03
Do you have anything else to add, Todd?
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:22:05
Just a couple of things just to make sure you're aware.
    • 00:22:09
So the data and the database is up to date.
    • 00:22:12
In addition to Lily's outreach data, the service data is also up to date.
    • 00:22:17
I wanted to let you know that we are in the final stages of
    • 00:22:25
On November 20th Council meeting, which is on Monday, we'll be there to present to Council about our budget for this year.
    • 00:22:41
No big surprises, just an increase in the personnel and a little bit of line item reallocation.
    • 00:22:47
We'll present a little bit about
    • 00:22:49
The goals that we have for the office at least for this year, and we'll mention the commission and the upcoming work, strategic planning and stuff like that that we'll be supporting you all on.
    • 00:23:01
No big, I don't have to present any detailed stuff to council just to make sure they understand kind of what our trajectory is for the next few.
    • 00:23:10
So that'll be on Monday if you're interested.
    • 00:23:14
And then I did want to just give you, I think this is exciting news, I got a call from Jacob Strohman, who's the city attorney today, and just checking in about our legislative recommendations, which is super exciting.
    • 00:23:28
I gave him kudos, I said, hey, this is monumental in the fact that usually we send these things off and don't necessarily get much feedback.
    • 00:23:36
And he told me that, the reason he called me was because the mayor was reading through
    • 00:23:46
And so I thought that was really wonderful.
    • 00:23:49
So they're going to go through it and look at it and decide what things to incorporate.
    • Jessica HarrisChair, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:23:58
      That's a big one.
    • 00:24:01
      That's all I have.
    • 00:24:06
Will the mayor be following up with this?
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:24:08
      That's a good question.
    • 00:24:09
So I think it's, right now it's Councilor Puryear and the mayor are, along with the city attorney, are sort of legislative agenda committee.
    • 00:24:19
You may hear from them if they have questions about it, but otherwise they just take, I think the recommendations were fairly clear history forwards and therefore
    • 00:24:28
You may just hear later, I think Jay will probably tell us which parts got incorporated or I can certainly follow up with him.
    • 00:24:37
I think he's open to that.
    • 00:24:38
So if you do have any questions that you want me to pull over to him or anything like that, let me know.
    • Jessica HarrisChair, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:24:43
Did you want to talk more about the proclamation?
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:24:46
      Yeah, the proclamation.
    • 00:24:47
So yeah, this is a new territory for us.
    • 00:24:50
This is something that our deputy city manager, Ashley Reynolds Marshall, suggested as an alternative.
    • 00:24:56
If scheduling, because this becomes just sort of a whirlwind of events right now and around the holidays, so we figured let's do
    • 00:25:05
We're going to do something at least commemorative at council.
    • 00:25:08
      Proclamations, we've never written one.
    • 00:25:09
They kind of read similar to a resolution.
    • 00:25:11
It's kind of the whereas, whereas, whereas, and then therefore this.
    • 00:25:16
We're going to try to craft one of those based on some of the other ones that we can find in history.
    • 00:25:24
Yeah, we'll forward the language of that if you share it with Jessica and Ernest and then hopefully get that on a council agenda.
    • 00:25:33
Most likely in December, it does take a little bit to get things on a council agenda.
    • 00:25:37
So if it doesn't happen in December, certainly in January.
    • 00:25:40
Just to acknowledge the fact that we've made it this far in 10 years is pretty good.
    • 00:25:46
      Yeah.
    • SPEAKER_04
    • 00:25:48
      Good question.
    • 00:25:50
Todd, are you presenting at the 4.30 reports on Monday or the regular meeting?
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:25:54
      Yeah, good question.
    • 00:25:55
      I think it's during the earlier session, the 4.30, 4 o'clock.
    • 00:25:59
I have to look at the calendar myself.
    • 00:26:03
      There won't be anything exciting.
    • 00:26:04
I think they'll probably talk for maybe five to ten minutes and then, you know, just be open to councilor questions.
    • SPEAKER_02
    • 00:26:10
Isn't that part, isn't that a closed session?
    • 00:26:14
      That's not a closed session.
    • 00:26:15
      It's still public.
    • 00:26:16
      Yeah, it's open.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:26:17
      Yeah, yeah.
    • 00:26:18
Closed sessions are really, really kind of limited to personnel matters and stuff like that.
    • SPEAKER_04
    • 00:26:24
There is no public comment, though.
    • 00:26:26
      I don't think there's public comment.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:26:27
      I don't think there's public comment.
    • Jessica HarrisChair, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:26:32
So will you still be tabling at West Haven that day?
    • SPEAKER_06
    • 00:26:39
      On Monday?
    • 00:26:43
So the West Haven Thanksgiving, I'm not
    • 00:26:46
Totally clear on whether that's more of a tabling event or more of just a show up and enjoy the time together type of event.
    • SPEAKER_02
    • 00:26:57
      Usually that's what it is.
    • SPEAKER_06
    • 00:26:58
      Yeah.
    • 00:27:00
So I don't know that I'll be doing the regular table kind of thing there, but I am planning to attend it just to represent us.
    • Jessica HarrisChair, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:27:12
So will you send us confirmation about when you're speaking?
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:27:17
      Yeah.
    • 00:27:17
I don't exactly know the exact time.
    • 00:27:19
I'll just show up at 4.
    • 00:27:20
      I think it's at 4 or 4.30.
    • 00:27:22
I can look at Council's agenda.
    • 00:27:24
      I can look.
    • 00:27:25
      Yeah.
    • 00:27:30
And there's multiple departments presenting, so we're just one in the line.
    • Jessica HarrisChair, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:27:36
      OK.
    • 00:27:37
I can check out their agenda.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:27:47
It looks to start at four.
    • Jessica HarrisChair, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:28:01
      Anything else?
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:28:06
      Nope, that's all for me.
    • SPEAKER_04
    • 00:28:16
Just to clarify, that means we are not having a meeting or a celebration next Thursday?
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:28:22
Yes, there will not be a celebration on Thursday.
    • Jessica HarrisChair, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:28:31
So the next item is action updates, which I'm assuming is whether or not we're going to have our workshop committee meeting next month.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:28:44
Usually action updates are if there's
    • 00:28:50
      That's where you'd share that.
    • 00:28:52
We are not, to the other point, we're not scheduling a work session for December because we use the December work session as the regular meeting because I think the other one fell right in the middle of times when people would be gone.
    • 00:29:06
      Just one meeting in December.
    • Jessica HarrisChair, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:29:09
And then the note about November 20th to December 4th city council meeting that was in reference to like advertising and then also the proclamation we can get on city councils.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:29:23
Yeah, but primarily for the recruitment piece because we don't exactly know when the proclamation will get on council agenda.
    • 00:29:30
We'll have to talk to the clerk about that one.
    • Jessica HarrisChair, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:29:33
      Okay.
    • 00:29:35
      So I'll plan to attend.
    • 00:29:37
Ernest will you be able to attend?
    • 00:29:39
      Next Monday?
    • SPEAKER_02
    • 00:29:41
      This Monday.
    • 00:29:46
      Yep.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:30:05
Yeah, the second, or the first Thursday.
    • Jessica HarrisChair, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:30:09
      Perfect, thank you.
    • 00:30:30
      Is that 6.30?
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:30:33
      Yes.
    • 00:30:34
We switched that around a couple of meetings ago, just anticipating the holidays and travel and so forth.
    • Jessica HarrisChair, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:30:54
      There is no new business.
    • 00:30:55
How much commissioners have new business?
    • 00:31:00
and then we'll open it for public comment again.
    • SPEAKER_00
    • 00:31:05
Oh I totally skipped over that.
    • Jessica HarrisChair, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:31:12
My brain was like, never mind.
    • 00:31:18
Is the ADA a position plan on there?
    • 00:31:20
      We just can't read it.
    • Suzanne LynnMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:31:21
Didn't we want to just talk about it?
    • 00:31:24
Sorry, I was looking at that.
    • Jessica HarrisChair, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:31:26
No, we didn't want to talk about it.
    • 00:31:28
      OK, great.
    • 00:31:28
So sorry, I just skip over it.
    • 00:31:29
      Thank you, Andy.
    • 00:31:31
      Officer Nominating Committee.
    • 00:31:33
So in January, we elect a new chair and vice chair.
    • 00:31:38
But we want to get nominations and gathering all that information in.
    • 00:31:43
We maybe just need two people to be a part of that committee.
    • 00:31:45
      Does anyone volunteer?
    • 00:31:49
Okay, so then it'll be your job to like sit it out however we want to like nominate people for that.
    • 00:32:01
And then to have that for January's meeting or February?
    • 00:32:07
December, December you presented the slate.
    • 00:32:11
So in December, we're presenting in December and we vote in January.
    • 00:32:19
Just remember there's four seats that will be open soon so it couldn't be from those members.
    • 00:32:37
      Any questions about that?
    • 00:32:49
And so just for context, what happens in that meeting is the chair, when it comes to nominating, the chair is like
    • 00:32:59
No longer a chair, and then Todd takes over the meeting, and then whoever nominated as chair, the chair will take on a meeting from that point on.
    • 00:33:07
So whoever gets that role, just be prepared to your first meeting will be in January.
    • 00:33:12
And it could be a little alarming, so.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:33:17
      Well, we're there for you.
    • 00:33:18
      Yes.
    • 00:33:18
      Don't worry.
    • 00:33:19
      Yeah.
    • Jessica HarrisChair, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:33:22
      Any other questions about that?
    • 00:33:32
      Okay.
    • 00:33:34
      No more public comments?
    • 00:33:37
      Okay.
    • 00:33:38
      So no responses.
    • 00:33:39
      Are there any Commissioner updates?
    • SPEAKER_04
    • 00:33:52
I'm not completely prepared to talk details but we've been talking about the zoning ordinance and it's coming to some critical points so if you are someone that wants to advocate for that we encourage you to look at the resources that are out there and speak to council either through a letter or public comment about investing in affordable, equitable housing.
    • Jessica HarrisChair, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:34:20
      Thank you for coming.
    • 00:34:22
      Anyone else?
    • 00:34:33
OK, so next steps are if commissioners want to attend the four upcoming outreach events, so contact Billy.
    • 00:34:44
I'll be at the city council meeting on Monday to advocate for people or advertise for people to join the commission.
    • 00:34:52
And oh, should I talk about that tonight?
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:35:01
I paused because I was thinking maybe we should talk about that because it's going to take over the January meeting.
    • 00:35:17
In the email that I sent out, we, and Jessica met, and I met after that email, and I think you concurred that that's a fine use of at least part of the meeting, so Paul Rudisill, who's our ADA coordinator, Lily and I will meet on Monday to sort of hash out like what will that format look like, and I think Jessica, you and I talked about
    • 00:35:46
rather than closing our meeting early than handing it over to the ADA transition team.
    • 00:35:52
So that may mean an extended meeting because I think the town hall that happened, what was it, it was a few, it was a month or so ago when Victoria was still here, was fairly long and it just sort
    • 00:36:06
We'll have public comment or questions right for the ADA transition team so just be aware that it may drag on longer and if you have to leave early or something like that we'll understand but yeah it should also be quite informative it's a super important piece of city policy and so it's exciting that's getting redone it hasn't been touched since 2013 so
    • 00:36:33
Lots of change to be coming through.
    • 00:36:36
And that's the January 4th meeting?
    • 00:36:38
      January 20th.
    • 00:36:39
      18th.
    • 00:36:40
      18th.
    • Suzanne LynnMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:36:41
      I believe, yeah.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:36:43
      Got it.
    • 00:36:44
I think we originally proposed the 4th, but the consultant that Paul is working with could not do the 4th, so we checked in about the 18th.
    • 00:36:53
      Okay, great.
    • 00:36:54
They have to get it done in January, because I think it's going to be helpful quickly after.
    • Jessica HarrisChair, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:37:00
I agreed to it and I kept telling Todd like that is the decision me as chair the next year may feel different about that but I just thought it was something really important for us to have and since our meetings have been like going really quickly and efficiently that having a longer meeting now that we know several months-ish in advance that we can prepare for that and again if you need to leave then.
    • 00:37:34
I guess another thing to mention in the vein of presentations at the VHR.
    • 00:37:45
There were like the EEOC representative and the DA like it was so much a good conversation that sometimes it's helpful to have an outside perspective and I know I have blind spots and so something I was recommending to Todd maybe for next year is that the Commission can maybe have like
    • 00:38:08
Maybe during our work session, if there's anything that we need to be doing, using some of that to have people present to us and learn a little bit more about legislation or whatever it may be.
    • 00:38:19
So just throwing that out there.
    • 00:38:22
      Then Todd asked me.
    • 00:38:23
      I was like, yes.
    • 00:38:24
Well, I've been thinking about it a lot, but I think it's something that I think would be beneficial for us as a whole because we're all coming from different levels of expertise and knowledge.
    • 00:38:33
So just a suggestion to whoever is going to carry the torch next.
    • 00:38:40
      Anything else?
    • 00:38:42
      Any other Commissioner updates?
    • 00:38:44
What should we run it back to?
    • 00:38:45
So next steps, work with Lilly on outreach events and I will be there Monday for open comment to just mention to City Council about our opening course slots.
    • 00:39:08
      Is that all?
    • SPEAKER_02
    • 00:39:11
      I think so.
    • Jessica HarrisChair, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:39:13
I always feel weird when our meetings end really quickly.
    • 00:39:17
      It's like a weird feeling.
    • 00:39:20
      So that's all.
    • 00:39:21
We will adjourn at 7.06 PM.
    • SPEAKER_02
    • 00:39:22
      Thank you.
    • 00:39:28
      Thank you.
