    • 00:00:09
      You have to approve yourself.
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:00:10
So do I just send you an email like now?
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:00:16
      That's fine.
    • 00:00:17
I think that will be just fine.
    • 00:00:20
To be honest, I think sometimes they create all these rules and nobody remembers that they've created them, and then I just follow them.
    • 00:00:28
      Because that's what I do.
    • 00:00:33
      But who will follow us?
    • 00:00:35
In some ways it makes things more clear, right?
    • 00:00:39
and sometimes more equitable because you can't just rely on like handshake deals to get things done unless the rule itself is inequitable.
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:01:04
Do I have to ask for the, I have community meeting too?
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:01:06
      Just whatever.
    • 00:01:06
Yeah, because they're all public meetings.
    • 00:01:09
Whatever ones you think you'll be away for, just shoot me an email and I'll drop it in the folder so that I remember.
    • 00:01:20
      That is Jeanette's scene.
    • 00:01:22
I thought you were looking late tonight.
    • 00:01:24
I did, but it worked out.
    • 00:01:26
      You made it anyway.
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:01:37
You went so far up, how come?
    • 00:01:39
      Huh?
    • 00:01:40
      You drove up to park?
    • 00:01:43
Oh, I don't mind walking and I hate dings.
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:01:46
      Dings?
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:01:47
      Oh.
    • 00:01:47
      Oh, car dings?
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:01:48
      Yeah, car dings.
    • 00:01:49
      Yeah.
    • 00:01:50
I'm in too and I was like, I don't know if anybody wants to keep up with it.
    • 00:01:54
I love when my property gets damaged and said no one ever.
    • 00:01:57
But I don't mind walking a little bit further.
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:02:00
      Yeah.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:02:07
There are, I said I wasn't going to bring food but I couldn't resist and I got a few snacks so they're out in the hall right now.
    • 00:02:15
It's not much but it's something.
    • 00:02:16
That is a great following to say I could not resist bringing snacks.
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:02:41
      Hello Katherine.
    • Suzanne LynnMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:02:54
Sorry, I'm throwing my phone at you.
    • 00:03:01
      Thank you.
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:03:04
That's fine, I'm like, hey, hello.
    • Suzanne LynnMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:03:18
Can we join any meetings remotely?
    • 00:03:34
Todd, what are the policies on missing meetings?
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:03:38
Yeah, I said maybe take a look at the email.
    • 00:03:43
I think I sent it to everybody, not just one of them.
    • 00:03:46
      Okay, okay.
    • 00:03:47
But there's a city policy and then there's a state bill about it too.
    • 00:03:51
      Okay.
    • 00:03:52
But it's basically there's like four, four, maybe five reasons that you can
    • 00:03:57
it's fine I mean you know I'm gonna be on vacation
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:04:16
I wouldn't call in anyway to be honest with you, like just in terms of where we're going to be inside of us, but these were already planned, so I'm trying to do what I can to not miss meetings, but lives exist.
    • 00:04:49
      I'm not sleeping.
    • 00:05:18
      You have a laugh.
    • 00:05:30
I didn't mess with your stuff I'll miss a work session in August
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:05:52
      Oh, yeah, congratulations.
    • 00:06:05
      Yeah, thank you.
    • 00:06:07
      Yes, I've seen really good.
    • 00:06:08
He's picking everything up really fast I'm scheming now because I
    • 00:06:15
I think there's some hesitation about just outright hiring another human for investigations.
    • 00:06:22
And so, especially until we get the FAP thing sorted out, which has turned out to be more valuable.
    • 00:06:27
But I knew it wouldn't be.
    • 00:06:30
      So I'm thinking about...
    • 00:06:32
      What's that?
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:06:33
      That's why we worked here.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:06:35
I mean, we did the big project, which is modifying the whole ordinance.
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:06:39
Now I have to modify the housing section bit by bit.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:06:43
But I think what I would do is train the whole team in investigation and intake strategies, because then I could actually get the broadening investigation work now, and it would just be me, which would be really nice.
    • 00:07:01
      and including the interns.
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:07:04
      It's cool.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:07:08
So that might bump up our two full-timers to like from intake and administrative specialist and outreach and administrative specialist to intake and investigation and then give them some money.
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:07:21
      That's my goal.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:07:24
      Pathway toward advancement.
    • 00:07:26
      and then I'll take over.
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:07:35
      Hopefully not too soon.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:07:38
      That's good.
    • Suzanne LynnMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:07:45
      Do we expect anybody else?
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:07:47
I know that Lyndele is not going to join us.
    • 00:07:52
      Yeah, I just saw that.
    • 00:07:53
I was giving her a chance to try to say to join virtually.
    • 00:07:58
Okay, I think she's just not ready yet.
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:08:02
I'll just move this chair over.
    • 00:08:05
      That way I'm not.
    • 00:08:06
      Okay.
    • 00:08:06
Why keep scooching gradually to the right to give space for you.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:08:10
I haven't heard anything from Andy.
    • 00:08:12
      We just do that.
    • 00:08:13
      Ernest?
    • 00:08:14
      Ernest.
    • 00:08:16
So, who calls these work sessions to order?
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:08:28
      That would be Kathryn.
    • 00:08:29
      Kathryn.
    • 00:08:30
This is a very confusing thing to me.
    • 00:08:35
      Okay.
    • 00:08:35
Kathryn said she wanted to be.
    • 00:08:38
      You've been delegated.
    • 00:08:38
      Okay.
    • 00:08:39
Then we can really vote if people want to.
    • 00:08:42
No, no, I'm fine to do it.
    • 00:08:43
I just thought that was like a moment.
    • 00:08:46
but I hereby call us to order by the authority vested in me by Martha in the city of Charlottesville.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:08:56
      Thank you, Martha.
    • 00:08:56
      Welcome.
    • 00:08:56
      At 6.37 p.m., correct?
    • 00:08:59
Would you like me to take attendance?
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:09:08
      Would you please?
    • 00:09:09
I can't even get the agenda up yet.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:09:24
Wolfgang, here, Kathryn, here, Suzanne, here, Andy and not Lyndele.
    • 00:09:36
We don't generally vote in work sessions so we don't really need to have a quorum to do that stuff.
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:09:44
And shall we now recite our mission?
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:09:48
Act as a strong advocate to justice and equal opportunity by providing city-wide leadership and guidance in the area of civil rights.
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:10:00
And I will let members of the public participating virtually know that if you experience technical difficulties, you may call 434-970-3027 and a staff person will assist you.
    • 00:10:16
      Is that me?
    • 00:10:17
      Okay.
    • 00:10:18
Do we have any public present?
    • 00:10:22
      Anyone online?
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:10:25
      We currently have no attendees.
    • 00:10:27
      Thank you.
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:10:30
So we have no response to no one.
    • 00:10:34
And now we are on our update.
    • 00:10:37
So our first order of discussion is discussing our plan to attend meetings of groups focusing on housing issues.
    • 00:10:47
So I believe it was my job to send out a list of when meetings were and I did my best and we should all have that list right now.
    • 00:11:01
So do we want to kind of divvy it up and see if we can fill in just a little bit more information?
    • 00:11:13
The one update I have is the Democratic Socialists Housing Committee meeting is, sorry, their next meeting is by Zoom on May 17th at 7 p.m.
    • 00:11:42
And I don't know what their regular attendance is because that's what their regular schedule is.
    • 00:11:48
      I assume it's monthly.
    • Suzanne LynnMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:11:51
Can I just ask a clarifying question?
    • 00:11:54
      Is our intention
    • 00:11:58
What is, I mean I know we talked about this, but what is our intention?
    • 00:12:01
Is it to first listen and just gather information about what is happening and bring it back versus I'm a member of the Human Rights Commission and I'm here, right?
    • 00:12:10
Like how are we thinking about that?
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:12:11
So my understanding was I think both of the things that you're sort of suggesting and others can weigh in.
    • 00:12:16
So my understanding was that we are doing two things.
    • 00:12:18
One is that we are there to listen, to hear what the issues are and to bring that back to the commission for educational purposes and to
    • 00:12:27
be able to quickly recognize areas where we should act.
    • 00:12:32
And one thing that occurred to me is Elizabeth Stark and the housing group of DSA did a great job of advocating for additional funding for the Pathways Program.
    • 00:12:44
And that's something that I think we could have reasonably jumped in and sent a letter to city council supporting that, right?
    • 00:12:53
      So that sort of thing.
    • 00:12:54
And then also I think there was another purpose which is simply to be a consistent commission presence so that people know we're out there and we can help connect them to the office or let them, assist them in coming to make comments or whatever.
    • 00:13:14
      Is that a fair?
    • 00:13:17
      Okay.
    • 00:13:20
And then the thought was we would each sort of pick a meeting, attend the meeting to be of the work.
    • 00:13:27
So I guess that's what we're doing now.
    • Suzanne LynnMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:13:32
      Perfect, thank you.
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:13:34
Or do we wanna just take this list and send it out now to the larger commission for everyone to kind of weigh in, think about it and do that at the actual,
    • 00:13:50
      Oh, sorry.
    • 00:13:54
I was just going to share, I already signed up to attend the CRHA resident services meetings on the second Tuesday, so I can figure it out.
    • 00:14:03
      Okay, so that's already done.
    • 00:14:04
Just like livable Seville, I think, Andy and I both.
    • 00:14:07
      I mean, I'm pretty consistent.
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:14:11
      You're part of them.
    • 00:14:12
      That makes sense.
    • 00:14:12
      You'll be there.
    • 00:14:13
      I'll be there.
    • 00:14:15
And all of these meetings are like Tuesday evenings.
    • 00:14:19
I'm very available Tuesday evenings, so I could probably take planning commission.
    • 00:14:23
And is the thought also that we would consistently attend, that we would be the liaison?
    • Suzanne LynnMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:14:40
      Yeah, that's what I thought.
    • 00:14:41
      I wanted to confirm that.
    • 00:14:43
      Okay.
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:14:48
I could also attend CRHA safety meeting for Tuesdays too, but it would displace.
    • 00:14:53
Yeah, I mean, I don't know that we have to attend all of those.
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:14:57
I was just providing all of the meetings that they have on their website.
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:15:09
      So, yeah.
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:15:13
Does that seem like enough for the moment?
    • 00:15:14
We can add those notes to this
    • 00:15:17
Send the updated draft to the rest of the commission and thank you for doing that.
    • Suzanne LynnMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:15:22
      Yeah, this is great.
    • 00:15:25
      Very helpful.
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:15:28
Yeah, and I'm actually gonna go out this weekend with the DSA housing group, you know, actually goes to people's doors who are risking eviction, right?
    • 00:15:39
And campuses to give them information, so.
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:15:44
And if you get any, I'm not sure, if you get any more that are during the day, I can sometimes flex my schedule for something during the day.
    • Suzanne LynnMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:16:08
So as those come in, I'll take a look at those too.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:16:14
I know we kind of looked it up on the city calendar and it appears in different ways, which makes it hard to find.
    • 00:16:20
      I did not.
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:16:21
You know what, I didn't have that on the list and I forgot.
    • 00:16:23
I think I wasn't dealing with the list that we updated.
    • 00:16:26
      So I can find that.
    • 00:16:28
Do you have information on that?
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:16:30
I can look on the city calendar just to find it.
    • 00:16:33
Yeah, it was a little confusing.
    • 00:16:36
It names different things at different times.
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:16:38
      Housing Advisory Committee?
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:16:39
      Yeah, Housing Advisory Committee.
    • 00:16:41
But I made me think of it because Suzanne said during the day that one's usually in the middle of the day.
    • Suzanne LynnMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:16:48
      I almost prefer those two.
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:16:51
The other one I couldn't find is Cliff.
    • 00:16:54
      Do they have regular meetings?
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:16:55
      Do you know Emily Dreyfus?
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:16:58
      Of course I do.
    • 00:16:58
I could just email her, but I thought you might actually know.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:17:02
I usually get their emails when they have them, but I think they're sporadic.
    • 00:17:07
      I think that's accurate.
    • 00:17:11
I can see when the last email was from her.
    • 00:17:18
Victoria tries to go to those with some frequency as well.
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:17:25
I can ask Emily to put me on the list.
    • 00:17:29
There is a form on their website that says if you want to join us, fill this out.
    • 00:17:39
I did not fill that out, but I could.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:17:41
They've been interested for a while in having a representative from the commission be there.
    • 00:17:53
All right, is there anything else we need to talk about here?
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:18:10
I was just wondering if we could put that sheet on the drive.
    • 00:18:17
      Bill.
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:18:17
      The List that Kathryn made.
    • 00:18:20
      Oh, you're asking time.
    • 00:18:21
      Yes.
    • 00:18:22
Because I know the answer's no.
    • 00:18:24
      Where?
    • 00:18:25
We pop it on our drive.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:18:28
Should we talk about teams again?
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:18:31
I want you to know that I organized a meeting this week that had people everywhere from Auckland to London, right?
    • 00:18:40
A single meeting, if you can imagine.
    • 00:18:41
      That was hard to do.
    • 00:18:42
And when we got in this meeting,
    • 00:18:44
We were like, how are we going to collaborate?
    • 00:18:46
What's the best platform to use?
    • 00:18:47
And someone said, what about Teams?
    • 00:18:49
And the entire meeting, which represented the whole world, was like, no.
    • 00:18:55
      Not Teams.
    • 00:18:58
I missed that conversation, I guess.
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:19:01
      I don't know the joke.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:19:03
So I had brought up the potential of using Teams as a place to store collaborative documents, but everybody kind of groaned because Teams is a little clumsy and hard to use.
    • 00:19:13
So yeah, depending on where folks want to, we can drop it in some shared location.
    • 00:19:18
I still have the Box account.
    • 00:19:21
I didn't notice that anybody was really using it, so I think I just kind of emptied it.
    • 00:19:26
But yeah, what would be best, I guess?
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:19:29
I think Teams is really the only option, as stressful as it is.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:19:33
      As stressful as it is.
    • 00:19:34
      How about this?
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:19:35
Well, don't we have something in our Outlook?
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:19:39
In your Outlook, yeah, if you go to
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:19:42
I mean I sent, and Todd then sent it to you.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:19:45
Yeah, it was emailed to you as well.
    • 00:19:48
So it's in your email currently.
    • 00:19:49
But if you'd like to have it centrally located where you can all edit it, that's on my list of things to do between regular meetings is to talk with IT about maybe a little quick orientation on to you.
    • Suzanne LynnMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:20:01
It might also be good to, once we tag people into all of these is to just, and I'm by the way happy to do this, I'm not asking for it, but just to have the name of each organization who's attending so that we just have that in our minds and every time we come together, any updates from anybody or if I'm like, oh,
    • 00:20:25
I'm really curious about what happened at the resident services meeting this week, right?
    • 00:20:29
And I'm happy to pop that into a table.
    • 00:20:32
Let me know, Todd, if I can help on that.
    • 00:20:34
Just want to be popping it into a table.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:20:36
By all means, if you'd like to.
    • Suzanne LynnMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:20:38
I was just writing it down and I'm like...
    • 00:20:40
      It won't happen.
    • 00:20:41
It will happen sometime next week.
    • 00:20:42
      I'll take care of that.
    • 00:20:44
      So good.
    • 00:20:45
      Thank you.
    • 00:20:46
      Yeah, absolutely.
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:20:47
Well, if you want to do that, just share it then with everyone.
    • 00:20:50
      Everyone needs to see it.
    • 00:20:52
Can I put it into a Google Doc?
    • Suzanne LynnMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:20:54
Are we allowed to use Google Docs?
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:20:55
Yeah, the hard part about Google Docs is they disappear.
    • 00:20:58
Like, if you disappear from the commission, and we don't have it saved somewhere, it disappears.
    • 00:21:02
And so for FOIA purposes, it's kind of nice to be able to access it.
    • 00:21:07
      How about this?
    • Suzanne LynnMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:21:09
      Tell me.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:21:12
How about I send everybody a link to a Human Rights Commission team which will have a section for files and then you can just drop things in there.
    • 00:21:25
      It's already created.
    • 00:21:27
How about I send the link that's already been created by Wolfgang?
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:21:32
I can clean it up a little bit too because I stopped building it after we were like
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:21:36
Yeah, that might be a good way to try, and then we can test it out and then I think it'll, what's the level of comfort or familiarity with using?
    • Suzanne LynnMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:21:48
      I don't know Teams, but I feel like I could, I mean.
    • 00:21:50
      It's very user friendly.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:21:51
It's like a Google Drive, but just with different tricks.
    • Suzanne LynnMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:21:54
      Yeah, I'll figure it out.
    • 00:21:56
I'll figure it out or I won't and then I'll call somebody who's smarter than I am.
    • 00:21:59
Yeah, you can always call me or whatever.
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:22:02
      Yeah.
    • Suzanne LynnMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:22:05
Okay, so I'll take that as a next step and if I can't figure out how to load it all, send it to Utah.
    • 00:22:12
Sounds good, not a problem, not a problem.
    • 00:22:15
      Okay.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:22:16
You can actually start, you can actually create Excel sheets and everything in Teams too if you want to, if you want to get that technical.
    • Suzanne LynnMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:22:23
The only way I use Teams is my husband and I chat on Teams during the Workday since we're both in the same space but can't always talk to each other, like that's my, yeah.
    • 00:22:33
      It's my use.
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:22:35
All right, so we're good on this.
    • 00:22:37
      We're great.
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:22:38
      We should have another question.
    • 00:22:40
We kind of said we're attending these meetings to check what they're saying, check what they're working on, offer our resources.
    • 00:22:47
Do we have any talking points from the commission about the work that we're interested to support over the next six months or the next year?
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:22:55
Well, we have our priorities that Mary said.
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:22:59
      Okay.
    • 00:23:01
Aren't those, do you mean the,
    • 00:23:07
The priorities that we identified during the retreat?
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:23:10
      No, after that, Mary...
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:23:14
I'm the only one without a laptop.
    • 00:23:17
You usually have one, don't you?
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:23:18
I do, I came from work.
    • 00:23:20
Mary sent a document that we talked about
    • 00:23:25
but not at great length in our last meeting.
    • 00:23:27
I don't think we made any actual decisions on this document.
    • 00:23:32
But that we're working toward ensuring substantially more decent affordable housing, pushing city council to enact policies that preserve and increase racial diversity,
    • 00:23:41
working to undo historic racial equities, particularly those that were codified as official policies, creating reparations, like that sort of thing.
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:23:50
I remember Mary had said that if she were to re- she would have maybe rewritten it at a second attempt, but if we're comfortable with those the general- Yeah, I don't think her rewriting was
    • 00:24:00
As I was saying, if we're comfortable with these are the things that we would say representing the commission.
    • 00:24:06
I don't want to misrepresent the commission's position if I'm going at representing the commission.
    • 00:24:11
So if those are collectively priorities, then those are the ones I'll represent.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:24:20
It seems like they're generally agreed upon.
    • 00:24:22
What we talked about last regular meeting was that Mary could put those into the resolution format, then you could vote on it, and then you resolve that those are your priorities.
    • 00:24:32
It gets published on the website and all that kind of stuff.
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:24:37
Is that a potential item that we could call for?
    • 00:24:40
I wasn't included in that email.
    • 00:24:43
      I'm sorry.
    • 00:24:44
They're just making sure I get it.
    • 00:24:47
I just didn't want to talk over you.
    • 00:24:49
      Sorry.
    • Suzanne LynnMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:24:50
It looks like it just went to Jessica, Kathryn, Ernest, myself, Victoria.
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:24:59
      Did you see it?
    • Suzanne LynnMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:25:00
      Do you remember seeing it?
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:25:01
I remember we talked about it at the Lassen Rice Commission, so I might have seen it over somebody's shoulder.
    • Suzanne LynnMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:25:08
Todd's going to take care of it.
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:25:12
We had mentioned getting those priorities into a resolution.
    • 00:25:17
Do we want to make that, could that be a potential agenda item, an action item to tackle between now and the next?
    • 00:25:26
      I think she's doing it.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:25:29
I've been talking a little bit on the side with her via email, so I think she's going to work on it.
    • 00:25:36
But if not, yeah, I can help her with that as well.
    • 00:25:40
She needs this from her personal email.
    • 00:25:44
      There it is.
    • 00:25:44
I did go to the whole group, but let's get it back up.
    • 00:25:54
Subject lines forward, documents for Thursday's meeting.
    • Suzanne LynnMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:26:03
      Sounds like it's arriving.
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:26:09
Okay, so are we good there?
    • 00:26:14
Then I think our next agenda item is talking about the draft resolution, which we disagree that Mary is handling.
    • 00:26:29
Anything else we need to say about that?
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:26:31
I can email Mary and say I'm available to help write it if she wants editing.
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:26:43
Do we have any new business?
    • 00:26:55
As far as I know we don't.
    • 00:27:06
All right, our next work session will be
    • 00:27:11
      June 1st.
    • 00:27:12
      Same bat, please.
    • Suzanne LynnMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:27:17
And our next regular meeting is here.
    • 00:27:19
On the 18th of this month.
    • 00:27:22
      Yep, yep.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:27:25
And everybody got, did you guys get the calendar invitations?
    • 00:27:28
I think I saw a few folks respond to them.
    • 00:27:31
      Hopefully that's helpful.
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:27:33
That is incredibly helpful and by some magic.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:27:36
      Yeah.
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:27:37
See, I don't want to look sensitive to my
    • 00:27:41
      Currently no attendees.
    • 00:28:10
      Any commissioner updates?
    • 00:28:20
My only update I sort of said earlier is I am gonna go actually out with the housing committee so I can report back about that.
    • 00:28:31
There are 75 people in the area facing families, facing eviction this week.
    • 00:28:38
And is that based on court records?
    • 00:28:40
How do you all get the list?
    • 00:28:41
So not y'all, not me, but that housing committee of the DSA and yeah, I think they look at the dockets and then they go, because people often don't realize that they're even on the dockets and they then go try to make contact with each household, let them know it's coming up and provide some basic know your rights.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:29:09
We just met with Victoria Barak and Emily from Legal Aid Justice Center this morning.
    • 00:29:18
They're going to start using our space, our conference room space on the
    • 00:29:22
And then the third, Tuesdays of the month, which is typically when the Charlottesville General District Court does its docket for evictions, and so they're going to have people, they're going to use their conference room to have people do consultations in our office.
    • 00:29:36
      Oh, great.
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:29:36
      That's fantastic.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:29:37
Because they do it sometimes by standing outside, but they're going to
    • 00:29:41
What are they going to do on Thursdays for the county?
    • 00:29:56
What's interesting about county courthouses is that they have a separate conference room and a lobby, so it's really easy.
    • 00:30:03
Whereas here, you can stand in front of CPD, but you can't really stand in the little scanner room before you get into the courtroom and you can't stand around in the courtroom talking.
    • 00:30:12
      It's super tiny.
    • 00:30:15
So that's starting to happen, or will start to happen soon.
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:30:18
Oh good, that seems like a great use.
    • Todd NiemeierOffice of Human Rights Director, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:30:22
Yeah, I think it's going to be a good collaboration.
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:30:28
The Crescent Halls will be doing their ribbon cutting on June 5th after renovations at 3pm and South First Street is doing their ribbon cutting on the next day, Tuesday June 6th at 3pm.
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:30:52
The School of Nursing had a dedication
    • 00:30:58
      of a bench.
    • 00:30:59
I don't know if you're familiar with the story of the nurses who graduated from the Burley School that were UVA affiliated but not recognized under Jim Crow and so it was a really lovely event actually that was organized kind of jointly by the school and the community and graduates of the nursing school and family members representing graduates
    • 00:31:26
So that is right in front of the common hall.
    • 00:31:38
And if you go into the school
    • 00:31:40
They're now the graduation photographs and names.
    • 00:31:43
Of all the nurses, there's still some missing, like the archives were held by individuals in their homes.
    • 00:31:51
They've been able to piece most of it back together.
    • 00:31:55
But it's kind of a who's who of Charlottesville when you read the names.
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:32:02
Lots of names that you'll recognize then.
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:32:06
And the other thing I think is just worth noting, there was an article today that Phoenix, I believe it's Phoenix, is using the Charlottesville model to remove SROs from its schools.
    • 00:32:22
      and adapt what Charlottesville did.
    • 00:32:25
And I know I sat on that committee with the city schools and we had no real models.
    • 00:32:31
Toronto was the model we used.
    • 00:32:34
And there was a lot of, well, they're not the United States.
    • 00:32:38
Anyway, so we are now apparently the model.
    • 00:32:43
      That's amazing.
    • 00:32:44
      Kind of amazing.
    • 00:32:46
      Yeah.
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:32:46
      Yeah, it's great.
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:32:49
Yeah, so it was nice to see kind of a positive City Schools national story.
    • Wolfgang KeppleyMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:32:54
      That's good.
    • Kathryn LaughonMember, Human Rights Commission
    • 00:32:58
      Any other updates?
    • 00:33:03
Then I suggest that we adjourn at 7.01.
